5 Building & Energy Podcasts You Should Subscribe To

By Peter Troast |

There’s so much good content out there related to home performance, building science and energy efficiency that it’s hard to keep up with it all. There are only so many hours in the day, and you can’t spend them all reading blogs.

That’s why podcasts are brilliant. They allow you to keep up with industry news and insights in the truck, on the road, or while you’re cooking breakfast. And while it may come as a surprise, there are a number of podcasts out there that are directly relevant to yourbusiness. Here are our favorites, in no particular order:

1) Green Architects Lounge.

Green Architects Lounge, produced by architects Chris Briley and Phil Kaplan, is just what it sounds like: a couple smart guys sipping cocktails and discussing issues in sustainable design and green building. Sometimes off-topic, often sophisticated, one commenter on their iTunes page (DBHme) notes: “I really appreciate the nuts-and-bolts, real-world experience that the hosts convey. I also appreciate the lack of polemic and doom-and-gloom that cloud other environmentally-themed Podcasts.” They also share their favorite cocktail recipes. Good stuff.

2) Energy Efficiency Markets.

Energy Efficiency Markets is produced by Elisa Wood and Lisa Cohn of RealEnergyWriters.com. Their podcast focuses on emerging trends in the energy efficiency industry - expected to be the largest clean energy market in North America, they aptly point out. With interviews from industry insiders and experts, and analysis of everything from LED lighting, to indoor air quality, to building codes, Energy Efficiency Markets is a valuable resource for staying ahead of the game in this growing industry.

3) Inside Renewable Energy.

Inside Renewable Energy is the podcast from Renewable Energy World . It provides in-depth analysis of every corner of the renewable energy sector, from biomass thermal, to the relationship between water and energy, to the question of noise pollution and wind farms. It comes out weekly, but the vast library of audio content that’s been accumulating since 2007 could keep you entertained for days.

4) Building Performance.

The Building Performance podcast covers everything in the high performance building industry, from basic building science to cutting edge training methods to carbon monoxide safety. It’s hosted by Corbett Lunsford, technical director of Green Dream Group, LLC in Chicago and executive director of the Illinois Association of Energy Raters, and features frequent interviews with experts from across the industry.

5) Master Builder Show.

In the Master Builder Show podcast, Jim Gibson covers all topics from across the building industry spectrum, with a particular emphasis on energy efficiency and green building. Podcasts range from entry lock installation, to construction law and financing, to how to deal with moisture problems. It’s a large library of practical, useful information for professionals in the home performance and energy efficiency industries, or for DIYer’s looking to gain some professional insight.

Let us know if we missed any; otherwise fire up those iPods, sit back and enjoy!
