Energy Circle is B Corp Certified
We started Energy Circle in 2008 with a very clear and specific purpose: to champion healthier, safer, more energy efficient buildings. From the outset, we also wanted Energy Circle to be a different kind of company – one built on the idea that business has a role in the world beyond its own profits.
To be honest, while the commitment was there, it was not until we entered the B Corp Certification process that the full breadth of what it means to be a socially responsible company became clear.
Our certification as a B Corporation brought rigor, and validation, to our original goals. Our incorporation documents have been amended to legally require us to consider the impact of our decisions on our employees, clients, communities, consumers, and environment.
How We Were Measured
Certified B Corporations must meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency across 5 categories:
Good Governance
Governance evaluates a company’s mission and engagement around its social and environmental impact, ethics and transparency.
Good for Employees
In this category, we were assessed on how well we support employee’s financial security, health and wellness, career development, and engagement and satisfaction.
Good for Our Community
We were evaluated on a broad set of of criteria including diversity, economic impact, civic engagement, and charitable giving.
Good for the Environment
While central to our mission, our impact on the environment is through our clients–the companies, institutions and people doing the real work of making and fixing buildings. We’re enormously grateful and privileged to serve the very best companies in the business and it is through them that we scored highly in this category.
Good for our Clients
It is not enough to say that we are uniquely qualified marketers who enable companies to impact more homeowners and more buildings and thereby grow their businesses. The B Corp process evaluated not just the quality and impact of our services but also our client communications, ethical approaches to marketing, data privacy and transparency.
Looking to the Future
We do not view our B Corp Certification as one and done. We scored well, but have lots of room to improve our scores on all fronts. Between now and our next recertification, we have a clear set of objectives to increase our impact and make Energy Circle even better.
